How does the Keystroke Report help promote effective First Draft editing?

Answer / Solution

Keystroke Report

A Keystroke Report is available on the First Draft tab and Reporting sub-tab in the InfraWare Management Console (IMC). This report provides insight into how transcriptionists and editors are using the tools in the ITC.  The information can help provide feedback to guide them toward higher productivity.  While there are no right or wrong numbers, it can be useful to identify whether keystroke tools are being used.  It can also help to compare the keystroke patterns of highly productive editors with those of less productive ones.

The report is very wide, and this screenshot covers only the left portion:

The values represent a ration of how many times each certain keystroke combination is used per unit of transcription produced.  Most headings are self-explanatory.  Here are definitions for some that might require clarification:

  • First Draft –  # of speech recognition jobs worked
  • TX – # of non-First Draft worked (regular transcription)
  • Select word to left – (ctrl + shift + left)
  • Delete word to left – (ctrl + bksp)
  • Delete word to right – (ctrl + del)
  • Uppercase – make selected text upper case (ctrl + period)
  • Lowercase –  selected text lowercase (ctrl + comma)
  • Capitalize – capitalize selected text (ctrl + /)
  • Select prev/next paragraph –  (ctrl + up/down) (now previous/next Paragraph)
  • FD Toggle Synchronize – times you synched / unsynched playback
  • Toggle Case – toggles between upper/lower/capitalized.  If you don’t have anything selected, it will toggle whatever word your cursor is in (shift f3)
  • Bullets and numbering –  any key stroke having to do with this, there are a lot
  • Select up/down – (ctrl + shift + up/down) highlights from cursor to previous / next new paragraph mark (now Select Paragraph up/down)
  • Selec(t) All – (ctrl + a)
  • Delete to period – Delete up to and including the next period (ctrl + shift + del)

To the right of many columns is an "Indicator" column.  This column normalizes the prior column by the amount of work performed.  For example, "Select Word To Left" is a raw count of the number of times that keystroke is used.  When comparing two different weeks when different volumes of work have been performed, that raw count will vary based on volume.  The Indicator, however, will accurately reflect the amount that keystroke is used per line of editing.

The implication is that using most of these keystrokes frequently will help improve productivity.  That isn't a universal truth, but using most of them on a regular basis will generally help.  Trainers, mentors and others will find that monitoring this report will help them provide feedback to new editors and those working to increase productivity.

Note: The Job# and Date columns only display data when you drill down into an editors jobs by clicking the plus (+) sign to the left of the editor's name.
