How do I setup a printer for delivery by remote printing?

Printer Setup for Delivery by Remote Printing Explained

Overview

The InfraWare Document Delivery System (DDS) supports automatic, hands-free delivery of completed documents via fax, secure ftp and remote printing.  This article discusses the requirements for using the remote printing option.

Solution

The specs for the printer are reasonably simple.  It needs to:

  • Be an IP printer (This means it has an Ethernet network card)
  • Accept the Post Script printer language (most do)
  • Have an internal queue name (For HP this is almost always the word AUTO, and we have tested more with HP than any other brand.)

An IP Printer can have one of 2 types of IP addresses:

  1. Private - An IP address that is routable only on the Facility's network.  In order for InfraWare to print to a private IP address, a Virtual Private Network (VPN) connection must be put into place.  This also ensures that the data being sent to the printer is encrypted.  See KB225 for infomation on setting up a VPN connection.
  2. Public - An IP address that is routable from outside of the Facility's network.  Data sent to an IP printer with a public IP address does not require a VPN connection, but the data is not secured.  It is highly recommended to use a VPN connection when using IP printing.

Once all of these conditions have been met, an administrator can setup automated delivery in the InfraWare Management Console (IMC) by:

  • Click the Delivery tab, then the Destinations tab.
  • Type a name for the Destination and select Printer for the type.
  • Complete the details, including the IP address and queue name.
    • (Note:  This is not a network queue name.  It is a setting local to the printer itself.  HPs are usually AUTO.)
  • Save the Destination and use it in one of your Delivery Plans.
